Tangihua Lions Lodge Access Road

This tramp is the only public access to the Tangihua tramps.

35 minutes from Whangarei this provides access to some of the most interesting and scenic bush tramps in Northlands Whangarei and Kaipara districts. Although vehicle access is only for those hiring the lodge, the road is used as a foot track to access the Tangihua forest. It is a 20 minute tramp from the car park to the bush line and the start of the Horokaka track. It is a further 15 minute walk to the lodge.

Beginning at the car park it is a pleasant walk through open farm land into dense native bush allowing you to see good examples of Northlands native trees, plants and bird life. The distance to the lodge is about 3km. This track is suitable for all age groups using the Tangihua Lions lodge as a school camp.

A viewing platform provides a good view of the surrounding ranges and the Tangihua Lions lodge. In spring the views of the flowering Kowhai are particularly notable. A number of tracks lead off this road. The Burma Trail, the Nature walk, The Kauri dam walk and the Horokaka track. It is easy to combine these and other tracks to complete a loop walk arriving back at the road via the Horokaka track.

The lodge clearing is a pleasant spot to picnic but please respect those who have hired the lodge and follow the track to a site situated in a bushy clearing about 5 minutes past the lodge. The track entrance is just past the barrier at the car park. This is also the beginning of the Te Haua Uru Track

The lodge and the gate into the lodge at the Omana Rd is securely locked. There is a car park available. If you wish to drive in to inspect the lodge you will need to contact the lodge custodian
