Provides a great introduction to Northlands native trees
The Nature Trail is part of a wider project aimed at teaching students how to identify different native plants and trees and to teach them;
- How important native forests are and why we need to protect them,
- The process a forest goes through to regenerate,
- The roles that individual trees and plants play in the forest environment.
In order to achieve this objective we are building a comprehensive learning experience to teach people about Northland bush and conservation issues. Some of the things we have developed so far are
- Tree identification and mapping,
- Easy to access information on individual species,
- A conservation trapping line for schools, and
- A pest monitoring line for schools.
The Tangihua Nature Trail was originally built by the Department of Conservation. We have since extend the trail to include more species of native trees and plants.
The trail is on one of the old tracks that was used for hauling Kauri logs out of the forest. The areas cleared for the track are regenerating and there are still plenty of large trees that would’ve been there well before the loggers.
There are signs at the base of a variety trees that identify the species of trees and has information on the trees usage by birds, Māori and early Europeans.
Access
The Nature Trail is an easy walk, suitable for all ages and fitness levels. It has recently been extend and turned into a loop (blue dotted line). The Trail now includes part of the Horokaka Track and the Access Road into the Tangihua Lions Lodge.

The Nature Trail is best accessed from the road the Lodge and is well signposted.
Track Markers
While on the track you will come across a whole range of coloured markers, many with writing on them. Do not follow any markers other than the orange DOC markers.
We have built a website to provide information on the trees and plants.
