Tramps and bushwalks – Kaipara, Whangarei, Northland

The tramps, tracks and bush walks around the Tangihua lions lodge

These tramps, tracks and bush walks were specifically designed and built to educate students about New Zealand Native Forests and Northland Geography.

There is range of tramping tracks suitable for all age groups and fitness levels. Anyone staying at the lodge or just wanting to tramp for a day can use them.

You will find under The forest on this website a great deal of information about the TangIhua and other Northland forests, plants and species

The tramps ensure that the Tangihua lions lodge, sitting in a secluded clearing in the Tangihua ranges Northland, is an ideal spot for school camps or for any other group wishing to explore or learn about New Zealand Native Bush.

There are two main tracks

The Te Haua Uru Track and the Horokaka Track. Joining to either or both of these tracks are the Access road, Nature trail, Whakapono, Tumanako and Tangihua Main Ridge tracks. This allows for a range of walks ranging from the very pleasant, easy stroll to the quite difficult. Some of the tracks pass by sites of cultural and spiritual significance to the Parawhau Ngapuhi so please stay on the marked tracks.

Half day tramps include the Access road, the kauri dam walk, the nature trail, the Whakapono – Tumanako loop, The Kauri grove walk on the Te Haua Uru Track.

Full day tramps are the Horokaka track and the Te Haua Uru track. The full Te Haua Uru track is not recommended except for senior, experienced students with good supervision.

The map opposite and on wall of the Tangihua Lodge Wall shows all the tracks. There are also small maps on each track sign post

There are two main tracks which the others join onto and form loops. There are at least 8 options allowing you to choose the duration and difficulty of your tramp. This is ideal for School Camps and family groups.

All junctions are clearly sign posted with estimated tramping times on them. If traveling in a group it is good practice to have the entire group gather at the junctions to avoid the group inadvertently splitting up.

Access to these tramps is via the Tangihua Lions Lodge access road,
