Hikurangi school students setting up the trap line
Providing school camp facilities for over 30 years
School camps have held by Schools and other youth groups for over 30 years. The schools who use the lodge come from Auckland to Katiaia.
The School camps range from year 3 to university students
School camp numbers. The lodge can sleep 50. There is plenty of room to camp if you have more than 50 people. There is also a small separate one bedroomed building which sleeps 3-4 people and can be used for staff members and parents to get some time out.
School Groups use the camp for many other reasons,
- Outdoor education,
- Bush craft
- Environmental education, conservation, pest control, pest monitoring
- Leadership and team building
- Accommodation for local tournaments – they can run around and be as rowdy as they want

Conservation Education
Education is an essential part of the project. It is crucial we invest in future generations to ensure continuation.
It is not only essential to make future generations aware of the need for conservation but also there are now a variety of careers which can be based around conservation. Studying environmental type subjects can lead to not only DOC or the Regional Council jobs but also Engineering roles e g those focused on preventing effluent from reaching our harbours. Environmental agencies need accountants, administrators, lawyers, builders and many other types of professionals.
A continuous source of volunteers are essential now and in 30 years’ time. These may well be people whose careers never involve the environment but at some stage wish to “put something back”
Teachers are our heroes and clients
We understand how hard a teacher must work to organise a school camp. Much of it is done in their own time.
We aim to help as much as possible
- We have information to help with school camp planning
- There is a range of school camp activities which can be adapted to suit your curriculum . We are always adding to these.
- School camp menus . These were provided to us by George Payne of Tauraroa Area School who has held many such camps.

Tangihua Lions Lodge Conservation and Education project
Overall goal
To create a high quality, accessible educational centre surrounded by a fully restored Ecosystem
How will we achieve this?
The Tangihua Lions Lodge Trust has identified three key areas to target.
- Education,
- Pest control
Education and pest control although separate projects will be closely integrated and run simultaneously. The goal is to reconnect youth with the natural world and their heritage, we will encourage them to get out and become active participants. This is not only includes conservation, sports and outdoor activities but providing a pathway future careers. We are also focusing on encouraging the understanding of key Māori concepts and practice. This not only relates to the native bush but the lodge itself as it is an ideal place for teaching as on a Marae. We are achieving this by building and providing resources which can be used by educators and students both in the field and the class room In order to do this we have or are
- Set up pest control to eradicate possums, mustelids, cats and rats on approx 900 ha on DOC land and 1,100ha on land surrounding the Tangihua Forest
- Build and provide educational resources based on the Standard New Zealand Curriculum for years 5 to 13
- Build and provide educational resources based for Te Marautanga O Aotearoa ( the Maori curriculum for teaching in te reo)
- Provide on-line resources for teachers.
This is an ongoing project.
