The Horokaka – Tangihua Main Ridge – Te Haua Uru loop
This is used by adventurous trail runners
The Tangihua Main Ridge Track forms a link between the Horokaka Transmitter station and the Te Haua Uru Track/Northern Tangihua Track junction.
At the junction the options are
- to return the way you came.
- Follow the Te Haua Uru track to the Tangihua Lions lodge (2 – 3 hours).
- Continue northwards on the Northern Tangihua Track to the Tangihua Hut (2 hours). At the hut you then follow the Northern Tangihua track to the Tangihua Rd (another 1 ½ hour’s tramp).
This Tramping track should only be tackled by experienced trampers. The track follows the main ridge line north. It is a rough undulating track, which is steep in some places. Although not a long track, travel is quite slow. Trampers must carry water. Be careful, there are steep drops off razor backed ridges in places. The ridge is exposed to rough weather. Make sure you are well equipped and have appropriate warm, waterproof tramping gear. The views from the track
are magnificent on a clear day.
The Horokaka – Tangihua Main Ridge – Te Haua Uru loop
The Horokaka Track joins up with the Tangihua Main Ridge Track and Te Haua Uru Track to form a loop that can take 9 hours with some strenuous climbing.
