Te Haua Uru Track

The track runs from the Tangihua Lions Lodge to junction of the Tangihua Main ridge track and the Northern Tangihua track

Once you are at this junction you have three options.

  • return on the Te Haua Uru track.
  • continue on either the Tangihua Main ridge track to the Horokaka Receiver station.
  • follow the Northern Tangihua track which ends on Tangihua Rd after passing the Tangihua hut. Both tracks are contain steep, rough patches and drop offs. Either option will take up to 2 -3 hours.

You will need to take your own water and good clothing as the ridges can be very exposed.

The loop track (see Tangihua Ridge track) is an option for experienced, fit trampers wanting a challenging day of about 7 to 9 hours or more.

From the Tangihua Lions Lodge you walk past the confidence course. The track crosses a small bridge which has a Punga through it and meets the Tumanako Track. There is a sign post here. The track up until the Kauri grove is good and well marked. From the kauri grove the Te Haua Uru Track it climbs steeply in some places to the junction of the Tangihua Main Ridge Track .

Whakapono and Tumanako loop track

This is an ideal half day tramp for Northland school camps. If you include the Department of Conservations Nature walk at some point you will have an interesting learning experience for students, teachers and parents alike.

The Whakapono and Tumanako tracks both lead to the Horokaka track. This tramp will take about an hour to an hour and a half.

There are several loop options (see the map) which can include following the Horokaka track back to the Access road or dropping off the Horokaka track on to the Nature walk. The tracks are clearly sign posted and stream and river crossings are bridged. It is suitable for people with moderate fitness. Although some sections can be steep, rough or muddy the track is mostly well formed and easy to follow. You will need to take water.

The Whakapono track leaves from just behind the Tangihua Lions lodge and heads up a spur to the ridge to join the Horokaka track. The Tumanako track is north and about 5 minutes away.

The Tumanako track (if going the other way, recommended) is found by going past the confidence course and onto the Te Haua Uru Track. It is well sign posted. You can use either of these tracks is an option when tramping to the Horokaka Transmitter Station via the Horokaka track.
