This is an ideal half day tramp from the lodge.
This is an ideal half day tramp for Northland school camps. If you include the Department of Conservations Nature walk at some point you will have an interesting learning experience for students, teachers and parents alike.
The Whakapono and Tumanako tracks both lead to the Horokaka track. This tramp will take about an hour to an hour and a half.
There are several loop options (see the map) which can include following the Horokaka track back to the Access road or dropping off the Horokaka track on to the Nature walk. The tracks are clearly sign posted and stream and river crossings are bridged. It is suitable for people with moderate fitness. Although some sections can be steep, rough or muddy the track is mostly well formed and easy to follow. You will need to take water.
The Whakapono track leaves from just behind the Tangihua Lions lodge and heads up a spur to the ridge to join the Horokaka track. The Tumanako track is north and about 5 minutes away.
The Tumanako track (if going the other way, recommended) is found by going past the confidence course and onto the Te Haua Uru Track. It is well sign posted. You can use either of these tracks is an option when tramping to the Horokaka Transmitter Station via the Horokaka track.
