Toropapa is native to New Zealand and is found from North Cape to and including Marlborough, hence the variety of names.

Totara is not common in the Tangihua ranges but can be seen on the nature trail. It is found from North Cape to and including Marlborough.
Toropapa description
Toropapa is a shrub growing to about 5m in height. the glossy leaves are alternate up to 5 cm wide by 15 cm long, sometimes lobed or slightly toothed on the margins. They vary in shape on the same plant and on nearby plants.
Toropapa grows in shaded areas and is frost intolerant.
Flowers and fruit
The flowers appear from late winter to early summer and have a strong, pleasant perfume. They are tubular shaped 5cm long. Colours include dark red, pink, cream, white or a speckled mix of those colours.
The small red berries of Toropapa are edible and sweet tasting
Status
The Toropapa has been heavily browsed by goats and possums and is hard to find. As this pressure reduces they will make a come back.
