Maukoro Carmichaelia australis New Zealand native broom, Makaka

Carmichaelia or Native New Zealand brooms are found through out New Zealand. There are 23 species, all endemic to New Zealand.

Maukoro are found…

Throughout New Zealand and the Tangihua the forest recovering from grazing. There a number of good specimens on the nature trail.

Maukoro Description.

Instead of leaves the stems are green and flattened. They grow to about 3-5m with multiple spindly trunks.

Flowers and seeds

In spring through to summer, it has small 5-6 mm white flowers with purple veins which sometimes has purple centres. The seeds are yellow, orange or red often with black dots.

The seeds are distributed when the seed pod bursts so seed travels only short distances.

Forest Role

Like Kowhai they are legumes able to establish on lighter soils and fix nitrogen.
